For Want of a Shoe. Mr J.A. Ibbotson a Master Farrier has two apprentice farriers working for him
at The Forge, Walton Street, Walton on the Hill, Surrey. The apprenticeship scheme that the Farriers'
Company decided to sponsor in 1958 has been expanding satisfactorily. There are about 1,200 shoeing
smiths in the country, many of them elderly, to deal with a horse population of 400,000 - and still
growing. Something like 1,500 smiths are really needed. The Farriers' Company scheme had 90
apprentices under training in 1972. Photo shows:- Mr. J.A. Ibbotson shows Mark Hall age 17 years old
and Paul Ibbotson, age 19 years how to make a horse show at The Forge, Walton on the Hill, Surrey
where there there hasbeen a forge on the site for 200 years. 23rd March 1973. Fox Photos Ltd.

In the 1960s I rode my pony to be shod from Woodmansterne to Mr Ibbotsons forge if I missed his mobile van to Mr Grahams farm where I kept my pony. Happy days. Janice Chapple
